WB reviews water projects implemented in Azerbaijan

A World Bank mission has arrived in Azerbaijan to review the process of implementation of the first and second projects to improve water supply and sanitation in small towns of Azerbaijan, the WB Baku Office said on Monday.

"The mission, which includes Project Manager Manuel Marino and Water Sector Manager Wael Zakut, will be on visit to the country on Feb. 21-27," the office said.

The main purpose of the mission is to review and discuss the implementation of projects to improve the water supply system.

Under the first water project, which covers 22 regions, the WB allocated $230 million of total cost worth $310 million. Of the total WB funding under the project, $8.9 million was used as of August 2010. As a result of implementation of the first project, at least 700,000 people will be provided with water and take advantage of the sewerage service. Implementation of this project is scheduled for 2012.

The World Bank's second project to improve water supply and sewerage systems in small towns in Azerbaijan covers 21 regions. Five of them are located in the Nakhichivan Autonomous Republic; the rest are Kurdamir, Ujar, Zardab and other regions of the country. The project started in 2008 and its completion is scheduled for February 2013. The total project cost is $410 million, where the proportion of World Bank is $260 million, of which $30 million is allocated by IDA. As of August 2010, out of total funds allocated by the bank. $3.3 million have been used.
