Iran to extend rail network to 15,000 kilometers by 2015

The length of Iran's national railroads will be extended by 5,000 kilometers to reach 15,000 kilometers by 2015, the deputy head of the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Taleb Zare said, IRNA reported.

"According to the fifth five-year economic development plan (2010-2015), 1,000 kilometers of railroads should be built each year," Zare' added.

Some 7,200 kilometers of railroad construction projects are underway across the country, which can fully met objectives of the development plan, he noted.

Some 33 million tons of goods and 29 million passengers are transported annually by the rail transportation network, accounting for 9 percent and 11 percent of the whole transportations in the country, Zare added.
