Azerbaijan, Baku, Feb. 15 / Trend E.Ismayilov /

The Azerbaijani Transport Ministry plans to introduce a unified payment system for public transport, ministry spokesman Namiq Hasanov told Trend on Wednesday.

He said the system will allow people to pay their transport fare in buses, subways and taxis. Special equipment will be installed, he said.

"The system is envisaged as part of the second phase of the intellectual management system and work will start this summer on the project," Hasanov said.

However, he didn't provide the exact date when the project will launch.

"Everything will depend on how things progress," he said.

Transport Policy and Economics Department head Sadraddin Mammadov earlier said it is planned to commission an intellectual transport management system by 2014-2015.

The system will be developed in three stages. The first phase was launched in late 2011 and will be up and running by June.

The system cost is over $95 million. It was launched in December.
