Azerbaijan to spend over $6.3 bln on water supply projects

Azerbaijan will spend more than 5 billion manat to implement projects aimed at improving water supply, Prime Minister Artur Rasizade said at a plenary session of the Azerbaijani parliament which discussed the government's report on the results of 2011.

"In 2011, work on provision of quality drinking water and reconstruction of sewerage systems continued in nine regions of the country, construction work in this area began in 29 regions of the country. This year, similar projects will be implemented in 21 regions. Over five billion manat will be spent on the implementation of projects," Rasizade said.

He said 39 water treatment plants of modular type were commissioned in 2011 to provide drinking water of adequate standards to people living along the Kur and Araz rivers.

"In general, 188 settlements with a population of more than 340,000 people were provided with such facilities," Rasizade stressed.

The official exchange rate is 0.7863 AZN to $1 on March 16.
