The Georgian-Lithuanian forum of local authorities is being held in Tbilisi.The event was opened by the Georgian Prime Minister Nika Gilauri and his Lithuanian counterpart Andrius Kubilius.

"The meeting at this municipal level is being held for the first time. It is a unique experience which in future will become more permanent," Gilauri said.

Gilauri noted that Lithuania's experience in negotiations with the EU is important for Georgia. "We, in turn, will share experiences in overcoming corruption," Gilauri added.

He said it is important to Georgia that Lithuania be not only a political friend, but also interested in tourism and investments.

Andrius Kubilius has expressed support to the territorial integrity of Georgia and the country's integration into NATO and the EU.

Kubilius said issues of free trade between EU and Georgia, as well as visas will be a priority in the second half of next year, when Lithuania chairs the EU.

"According to the World Bank, go ahead in terms of trade and we'll assist you," the Prime Minister of Lithuania said.

A Memorandum of Understanding which was signed by the presidents of the national associations of local governments of Georgia and Lithuania was also issued at the forum.
In addition, cooperation between the two countries, local government reform in Georgia, development of local and regional economy will be discussed. A Twinning ceremony between the Chiatura municipality and the Lithuanian municipality will also be held at the forum.
