The amount of $24 billion in main goods that Iran imports every year does irreversible damage to domestic production, a member of Iran's Majlis (parliament) says.
Although its national slogan is "Domestic production, support for Iranian investments and jobs," Iran's government imports 6 to 7 million tons of wheat while feeding livestock with domestically grown wheat, Mohammad Dehghan, member of the Majlis' leadership board told Fars News agency.
While importing main goods, the government offers such low prices for Iranian farmers' wheat, and barley crops that it makes more economical sense for them to sell their crops as feed, Dehghan said.
The volume of soya, used to feed chickens, has quadrupled in price.
