Azerbaijani transport sector increases freight traffic by over 3 percent

Transport sector of Azerbaijan transported 64.7 million tons of cargo in January-April, which is 3.2 percent more than the same period in 2011, the State Statistics Committee said on Wednesday.

Some 71.8 percent of the goods from the total amount, transported in January-April, fell to the private sector. Some 51.2 percent of goods were transported by road, 31.2 percent - pipelines, 10.9 percent - rail and 6.7 percent - by sea.

Some 494.1 million people were transported by passenger transport in January-April, which is 9.2 percent more than in January-April 2011. Most of the passengers were transported by road transport (86.4 percent) and metro (13.3 percent).

Some 7.1 million tons of cargo was transported by rail in January - April, which is 5.3 percent more than in January-April 2011.

Some 4.3 million tons of cargo was transported by sea in January-April, which is 5.8 percent more than in January-April 2011. The entire volume of transported cargo fell to international operations. The volume of cargo handled at ports of Azerbaijan in January-April amounted to 4.2 million tons, which is 2.4 percent more than in January-April last year.

Some 33.1 million tons of cargo was transported by road transport, which is 7.5 percent more than in January-April 2011. The volume of passenger traffic totaled 426.8 million (increase by 9.1 percent). Some 96.4 percent of the passengers were transported by buses and 3.6 percent - by cars.

Some 65.8 million people were transported by the subway, increasing by 10 percent.

Some 418,600 passengers were transported by air transport, which is 14.5 percent more than the same period in 2011. Some 1.5 percent of traffic by this kind of transport fell to private sector.

Some 13.9 million tons of cargo was transported through the Eurasian transport corridor at the territory of Azerbaijan in January-March 2012, which is 4.3 percent more than in January-March 2011. Some 64.7 million people were transported through the corridor in January-March, which is 7.8 percent more than in January-March 2011.
