The volume of fuel loaded and unloaded at Iran's southern Khorramshahr Port increased by 97 per cent in the first seven months of the current Iranian year which began on March 20, compared to the same period last year, ISNA quoted Khorramshahr ports and maritime department's director Adel Daris as saying.

"During the seven month period, 33,646 tons of fuel was loaded and unloaded," he added.

Over 982,000 tons of goods were also loaded and unloaded at the port, he said, adding that the figure was two per cent higher than the previous year.

The 11 major Iranian ports have the loading and unloading capacity of up to 172 million tons, the head of the Ports and Maritime Organisation said in August.

Ataollah Sadr added that just 135 million tons of the ports' capacity is currently being used for loading and unloading goods, the Mehr News Agency reported.

The ports have the capacity of 5.7 million TEU, but only three million capacity is being used, he noted.
