The Georgian National Agency for Food Security destroyed five tons of horse meat in a landfill in Kaspi (Eastern Georgia) on Friday.

On Feb.8 the Agency received a message from the Kaspi District Interior Department o about revealing a great batch of horse meat.

Specialists inspected the goods stored in a local resident's private house in unsanitary conditions and was prepared for sale in Georgia's major cities in the guise of beef.

"In addition, the meat had already begun to decompose, and laboratory analysis showed that the horse meat was infected with salmonellosis. It is clear that animals were slaughtered outside the slaughterhouse, which is prohibited by law," the report says.

The investigation revealed that the horses were stolen, and slaughtered for sale.
