Astara Port, located in Iran's northern Gilan Province, will be inaugurated today as the first private port in Iran, the Mehr News Agency reported.

The port's loading and unloading capacity is projected to be around 3 million tons.

The first phase of the project cost 300 billion rials (about $24.5 million) to complete. Some 750 billion rials will be invested to inaugurate the next phases of the project.

In August 2012, managing director of the Ports and Maritime Organization of Iran, Ataollah Sadr, said Iran has 14 ports in general, four of which, including Astara port are located on the Caspian shore.

The port aims to enhance commercial transactions with the Caspian Sea states, he added.
