In 2013, Uzbekistan increased its cotton fibre production by 1.4 percent as compared with 2012, up to 1087451 tons, a source in Uzbekistan's government circles told Trend.

The source said that cotton yarn production in the past year increased by 17.4 percent up to 171,348 tons and cotton fabric production grew by 37.7 percent up to 77,730000 square metres.

It was previously reported that in 2012, cotton fibre production in Uzbekistan decreased by 0.6 percent compared to the same period of 2011 up to 1,095,000 tons.

Uzbekistan ranks sixth in the world in terms of cotton fibre production and third for its exports. The country annually produces about 3.5 million tons of raw cotton and 1-1.2 million tons of cotton fibre.

Medium staple varieties of cotton fibre with a length of 32-33 millimetres make up 95 percent of the total cotton cultivated in Uzbekistan, whilst long fibre varieties with a length of 36-39 millimetres make up five percent. Over 65 percent of produced cotton fibre is exported.
