Azerbaijan Airlines will initiate a direct flight to the U.S. in autumn 2014, deputy head of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL) Sabir Ilyasov told Trend on May 16.
"The Baku - New York - Baku flights are planned to be made by Airbus A340, as well as Boeing," he said.
"The flight is planned to be initiated in autumn," he added.
Asgarov stressed earlier that they have already received a permit from the U.S. Federal Aviation Authority (FAA), the experts of which have praised the level of Azerbaijan's aviation safety compliance with international standards.
"This will be the first flight from the South Caucasus region to North America," he said.
Asgarov added that it serves as further evidence of the status of AZAL as a regional leader in the field of passenger transportation.
Currently, AZAL fleet consists of Boeing 757-200, Boeing 767-300, Airbus 319, Airbus A320, Airbus A340-500, Embraer ERJ 170-100LR and Embraer ERJ 190-100 aircraft.
