By Daniyar Mukhtarov - Trend:

Private exchange offices must strengthen their security in Kazakhstan, Chairman of the Kazakh National Bank Kairat Kelimbetov said at a press conference on June 2.

"The National Bank, together with the exchange offices, will work to strengthen its security in the medium term," he said.

"The exchange offices, working under banks, are equipped with the appropriate equipment, including special information technology software, and video cameras," he said. "Many private exchange offices do not have such equipment."

"Moreover, there are certain requirements for equipment at exchange points in connection with terrorism financing counter measures," he added.

"The National Bank does not intend to close the private exchange offices, although it had previously stated that in the future, the majority of exchange points in Kazakhstan must work as the bank branches," he said.

"But this does not mean that we are taking specific measures today to restrict the activity of private exchange points," he said.

"The owners of private exchange offices are obliged to voice an initiative to enhance their security," he said.
