Scientific achievements should be used for peaceful purposes – ANAS Head

All scientific achievements should be used for peaceful purposes and be directed to the formation of civilized relations between the countries, the President of the National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Akif Alizadeh said.

He made the remarks during the roundtable on the topic: "The convergence of technologies and the shapes of future: the main challenges of the XXI century" Oct.3 in Baku in the framework of the IV Baku International Humanitarian Forum.

He said that despite the fact that we live in the XXI century, the world is experiencing conflicts and war, the people are being expelled from their lands, killed, humanity continues to struggle with such diseases as bird flu, Ebola virus and others.
Alizadeh said new scientific achievements are used both for the benefit and the detriment of mankind.

In particular, scientific achievements are still used in the creation of new types of weapons, weapons of mass destruction, he said.

During his speech Alizadeh touched upon the issue of nuclear technology.
In particular, the development of nuclear technology has both positive and negative sides, he said.

Nuclear technology is widely used in the treatment of cancer, their diagnosis in medicine and radioisotope techniques are widely used in other areas as well, he said.

The head of the Academy of Sciences cited the accidents at the Chernobyl and Fukushima nuclear power plants as the negative effects of the use of nuclear technology.
