Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has pointed to the possibility of diversifying the Russian-Turkmen trade and economic relations, taking into account new approaches and current realities during a meeting with Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat, the Turkmen government said Nov. 22.

"Russia is a major trading partner of Turkmenistan," the president said. "The largest Russian companies successfully operate on the Turkmen market which is attractive for foreign investors."

A meeting was held as part of the Ashgabat summit of the CIS Heads of Governments. A positive trend was stressed in the trade turnover between the two countries. On average, it has recently amounted to over $5 billion.

While discussing the international agenda issues, Berdimuhamedov and Medvedev paid attention to the important aspects of cooperation in the field of ensuring the global security of energy supplies and the formation of its legal framework, optimizing the transportation flows in Eurasia and solving the environmental problems, Turkmen dovlet khabarlary state news agency reported.

There are reserves for further trade expansion. Thus, Turkmenistan purchased about 1,500 various types of KAMAZ machinery worth more than $ 125 million. The country plans to purchase new batches in 2015, Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper wrote.

The effective relations have been established in the field of shipbuilding and maritime freight transportation via the Caspian Sea. In this regard, Russia is showing great interest in purchasing Turkmen horticultural products, building materials and other goods.

"Some issues of investment cooperation, development of the agro-industrial complex, the prospects of expanding the dialogue on science, technology, education, sports and culture were discussed at the meeting," Vatan newspaper wrote.
