The Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway is being constructed in Iran and it is expected to be completed in 2016, the Iranian news agency ISNA reported Sept. 11 with reference to Masoud Nasr Isfahani, the deputy director of the construction of transport infrastructure company under the Iranian Ministry of Roads and Urban Development.
He said that the work is under completion to create the infrastructure as part of the construction of the Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway.
"The infrastructure is 90 percent ready in some sections of the railway," he said.
He said that this railway is very important for Iran.
"The railway is being rapidly constructed," he said. "Most of the work on the Qazvin-Rasht section has been fulfilled. I hope that the work on the railway section up to Astara will be accelerated and completed in the near future."
Earlier, Iranian officials stated that the Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway would be constructed in 2014.
The Qazvin-Rasht-Astara railway is part of the North-South transport corridor.
The investments made in the construction are estimated at $ 400 million.
At the initial stage, it is planned to transport 6 million metric tons per year and up to 15-20 million metric tons per year in the future.
