By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

Turkey will announce a tender for construction of Kanal Istanbul waterway and the new ‘Canakkale 1915’ bridge, the Milliyet newspaper reported Aug.2.

The tender is expected to be announced in the coming days.

Earlier, Turkey’s Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said that the new ‘Canakkale 1915’ bridge will be built in the country’s Canakkale province.

He noted that the bridge’s construction will begin in March 2017, according to the preliminary data.

The purpose of building the Kanal Istanbul is to reduce the burden on the Bosphorus strait. Primarily, oil tankers will pass through the new canal.

Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan expressed the intention to implement this project in 2011.

The length of Kanal Istanbul will be 45-50 kilometers, while its depth and width will be 25 meters and 145-150 meters, respectively.

The project’s cost is $20 billion.
