Kyrgyzstan pays significant attention to its energy sector, supporting new energy projects and working on attraction of investments to this area.

"The Kyrgyz Republic has sufficient reserves of fuel and energy resources. The hydropower potential of 252 large and medium-sized rivers is estimated at 18.5 million kW of power. More than 140 billion kWh of electricity is being produced, 10% of which are currently used in the country," a source in the National Energy Holding of Kyrgyzstan told Trend.

Electric power is produced by 7 hydroelectric power stations, 2 national heat stations and 12 small hydroelectric power stations with a total installed capacity of 3634 MW, according to the Holding.

Among the main energy sources, renewable energy sources (RES) were mentioned as intensively developing and potentially important are for the country.

“Kyrgyzstan has a high potential for renewable energy sources, which is estimated at 840.2 million tce per year. The main types of RES in the country are the energy of small rivers and streams, solar energy, wind energy, geothermal energy and biomass energy,” the source said.

According to the source, although the level of practical use of the renewable energy is low on the country’s energy balance, it is expected to reach intensive productivity, attracting foreign and local investments, and become a significant energy source in short time.

Active work in energy sector was started in the early years of Kyrgyzstan’s independence. The demand was critical and the country initiated massive work to provide the population with electricity, despite the difficult financial condition and a number of other difficulties.

In 2001, Tashkumyrskaya HPP with capacity 450 MW was put into production. Shamaldysai HPP with capacity of 240 MW was commissioned in 2002. In 2010 the first aggregate Kambaratinskaya HPP-2 with capacity of 120 MW was put into operation.

The reconstruction of the dust preparation systems was carried out in the period of 2012-2013, in order to use the Kara-Kechinsk brown coals at the Bishkek thermal power station. It allowed increasing the volume of their use from 1500 tons in 2007 to the current 450,000 tons per year.

“A promising area for the development of the Republic's energy sector is the generation of new capacities and the reconstruction of existing electric power sources in order to further meet the demand of consumers,” the source said.
