By Ali Mustafayev – Trend:

Transporting goods from Far East and China via Baku-Tbilisi-Kars is in direct interest of the Netherlands and it already considers the ways of joining the railway, Dutch ambassador to Azerbaijan Onno Kervers told Trend.

“We are trying to look at how we can profit by linking to Baku-Tbilisi-Kars,” said the ambassador.

He added that nearly a month ago an expert from Limburg, a southern province of the Netherlands, visited Azerbaijan to participate in a seminar related to exploring and implementing important transport corridors, including Baku-Tbilisi-Kars, and he was very enthusiastic regarding the fact that the Netherlands can connect to Azerbaijan to have goods from China, from the Far East, and other regions.

“So, we see a lot of possibilities here. I think the Netherlands will more and more connect to such an important transport corridor as Baku-Tbilisi-Kars,” said Kervers.

The BTK railway was constructed on the basis of the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey intergovernmental agreement. The main purpose of the project is to improve economic relations between the three countries and gain foreign direct investment by connecting Europe to Asia. The railway is intended to transport one million passengers and 6.5 million tons of freight at the first stage. This capacity will then reach 3 million passengers and 17 million tons of cargo.
