Azerbaijani Copyright Agency: New methods needed for copyright protection in digital world

Baku, Azerbaijan, Dec. 13

By Huseyn Valiyev - Trend:

Technological development requires new methods and algorithms to protect copyrights in the digital world, head of the Azerbaijani Copyright Agency Kamran Imanov told reporters in Baku on Dec.13.

Imanov said the technological changes taking place today, in a certain sense, create copyright-related problems.

"This is due to the fact that existing traditional methods and algorithms can not adapt quickly to the digital environment. On the other hand, the digital environment is a colossal stream of information, which is calculated daily in two quintillion bytes. This proves that 90 percent of the world's information was generated only over the past 2-3 years, so we should look for new methods and algorithms for copyright protection in the digital environment," Imanov said.

In addition, according to Imanov, the object of copyright protected by traditional methods differs from its digital analogue. And these differences lead to the fact that existing forms of copyright protection lose effect and this also requires new legal approaches.

"The protection of copyright in such an important system and the wide dissemination and accessibility of the Internet, creates a so-called imbalance in this system. Because technological achievements give great advantages to consumers, and the authors' positions are weakened," he noted.

"Thanks to the efforts of the head of state, Azerbaijan has gained recognition in the world, has taken the path of innovative development. As we know, in the index of global competitiveness, the country moved from the 37th place to 35th place. The reforms carried out by the head of state positively affect the area of intellectual property protection. For example, in the index of intellectual property innovation the country was ranked the 71st, but now is 37th," he said.
