A Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation was signed between JSC Kazakhstan Center for Modernization and Development of Housing and Communal Services (JSC KazCenter Housing and Communal Services), Union of Waste Processing Enterprises UNIRE (Italy) and Kazakhstan's Waste Management Association Kazwaste in Almati on Jan.26, the Kazakh Investment and Development Ministry said in a statement.

The parties will cooperate to create and further develop waste management systems, organize activities on joint project, provide consultations and make recommendations on amending Kazakhstan's legislation, search for and attract new partners and sources of financing, and other areas in the field of integrated waste management.

The Energy Ministry of Kazakhstan previously said that 5-6 million tons of solid household waste are generated annually. By 2025, this figure could grow to 8 million. The share of processed and recycled solid domestic waste in 2017 was only 9 percent.

The lack of factories and technologies for efficient processing of solid waste, an undeveloped system for separate collection and sorting of waste and storing them with a unified mass at landfills leads to the accumulation of hazardous waste and substances. As a result, environmental quality indicators are constantly deteriorating, and natural landscapes are increasingly being subjected to an irreversible process of destruction.

However, still the problem of waste disposal can be resolved. Previously, the Kazakh president called for investing in "green" technologies and taking measures for the modern utilization and processing of solid waste with broad involvement of small and medium-sized businesses.
