Uzbekistan plans to localize production of most popular medicines

Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev signed a resolution "On additional measures to accelerate the development of the pharmaceutical industry."

The document approved the "road map" to ensure favorable conditions for the accelerated development of the pharmaceutical industry.

Under the document, the heads of ministries, departments and other organizations bear personal responsibility for the timely, high-quality and full implementation of the road map.

Working groups have been formed to study the real situation in the free economic zones Nukus Farm, Zomin Pharm, Kosonso-Pharm, Sirdaryo-Pharm, Boysun-Pharm, Bustonlik-Pharm, Parkent- Pharm and solve existing problems.

According to the document, the working groups will study the allocated land plots for organizing the activities of free economic zones for their compliance with the requirements, the availability of transport, engineering, communication and production infrastructures. The general plans of free economic zones are to be reviewed. Accordingly, measures will be taken to attract potential investors for the implementation of investment projects on the territory of free economic zones.

Within two months, a program of measures will be approved for the organization of plantations of medicinal plants and a list of investment projects for the production of finished medicines and medical products, auxiliary and packaging materials planned for sale on the territory of free economic zones.

The State Committee of Uzbekistan for Architecture and Construction, the State Committee of of Uzbekistan on Roads, JSC Uzbekenergo, JSC Uztransgaz, Uzbektelecom jointly with other interested agencies were tasked with ensuring the development of budget documentation of projects on development of transport, engineering, communication and industrial infrastructures of free economic zones within a month after the approval of the general plans of free economic zones

A working commission was established to determine the list of priority medicines and medical products to be developed and produced in the republic.

Currently, 74 percent of Uzbekistan's domestic demand is covered at the expense of imports despite the fact that domestic enterprises have been granted various privileges for production of import-substituting products for several years. More than half of 6,824 types of imported medicines can be produced in Uzbekistan, but this figure currently stands at only 27 percent. Medicines used in oncology, gynecology and dentistry are completely imported from abroad.

Last year, 1.6 billion conditional packages of medicines and medical products were produced, which is 34 percent more than in 2016.
