Senate (upper chamber) of the Uzbek Parliament approved issuing of new 50, 100, 200 and 500-soum coins, the press office of the Senate said in a statement.
According to the information, Central Bank of Uzbekistan’s proposal on issuing 50, 100, 200 and 500-soum coins was considered and approved during the meeting of the Senate on March 17. A new design for the coins has also been approved.
The 200-soum coin will be issued for the first time, whereas the 50-soum coin was issued in 2001-2002, the 100-soum coin – in 2004-2005 and the 500-soum coin – in 2011.
Earlier, the Central Bank of Uzbekistan announced plans on replacing minor bank notes by new coins. On top of that, issuing of a bigger par value bank note is also being considered currently.
