Iran steel output surges in 5 months

Iranian steelmakers produced a total of 9.32 million tons of semi-finished and finished steel products during the first five months of the current fiscal year (started March 21), registering a nearly 11 percent growth compared to last year’s corresponding period, IRNA reported on Oct. 17.

During the same period last year, Iran produced 8.41 million tons of steel.

Iran produced 94,300 tons of copper cathode, 154,300 tons of aluminum, 102,400 tons of alumina in the five-month period, marking 63 percent, 7.3 percent and 0.09 percent rise compared to last year.

According to the latest report released by the World Steel Association, Iran’s June steel output grew 16.5 percent year-on-year to hit 2.08 million tons.

Iran is currently the world’s 11th biggest producer of steel. The country is placed between Italy (10th) with 12.8 million tons and Mexico (12th) with 10.37 million tons.

The world’s 64 steelmakers produced a total of 881.45 million tons of steel during the six months, up by 4.6 percent YOY.
