By Rashid Shirinov – Trend:

Kazakhstan plans to restore 124,000 hectares of irrigated land in 2019 as part of the program for the development of irrigated lands, Trend reports referring to the Kazakh media.

The government adopted a program for the development of irrigated lands until 2028, which aims to increase the area of irrigated land from 1.4 million to 3.5 million hectares.

"This figure is planned to be achieved through the restoration of 600,000 hectares of land that was used in the Soviet period and 1.5 million hectares of new land," Deputy Agriculture Minister of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nysanbayev said.

He added that projects to modernize the irrigation system on an area of 126,000 hectares are already being implemented.

"It is planned that large multinational companies will finance the construction [of the irrigation system] through their own funds, as well as through attracting loans from international financial organizations and second-tier banks," Nysanbayev said.

It should be noted that at the recent enlarged meeting of the government, the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev instructed the Agriculture Ministry to increase the area of irrigated land.
