Iran is using foreign companies to manufacture ships with capacity of over 10,000 tons, Managing Director of Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) Mohammad Saeedi said, Trend reports via the Young Journalists Club (YJC).
He said Iran has the potential to manufacture ships with capacity of up to 2,000 tons.
He added that Iran needs new technologies to make ships with bigger capacity.
“Unfortunately, due to the US sanctions, problems emerged with the import of new technologies,” he said.
Commenting on the problems in the shipbuilding sector related to exports and imports, he noted that importers and exporters shouldn’t worry about importing and exporting their products.
“That’s because a program has been set up to minimize the impact of sanctions on the sector,” he said.
He added that the number of Iranian cargo ships has reached 151 from 21 over the past 40 years.
