Cancellation of targeted social assistance isn’t a topical issue in Azerbaijan, Minister of Labor and Social Protection of the Population of Azerbaijan Sahil Babayev told Trend Feb. 14.

“We believe there will always be need for providing targeted social assistance," he said. "Of course, in one form or another, the mechanism for providing targeted social assistance may vary, especially with regard to the disabled population, but it will always be operational."

Babayev stressed that the existence of such a mechanism is extremely important, given the factor of persons with disabilities, both among adults and children of poor families.

“In parallel with this mechanism, we intend to identify the able-bodied part of the population in order to involve them in the self-employment program,” the minister said.

Targeted social assistance is a type of monetary assistance that the state provides to low-income families. In Azerbaijan, targeted social assistance is appointed for a period of two years with the right to reappointment.
