Trend:

The Governor of the Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Abdolnaser Hemmati has said the recent exemption of some items from import bans for sailors and residents of border regions was the cause for foreign currency fluctuations in Iran during recent days.

Iran’s government has exempted the residents of border regions and sailors from the import bans, so that they can import the necessary food items and home appliances. Previously, imports of 1,339 items were banned, but now the government allows the residents of border regions to import goods for their needs.

The official expressed his concern over the issue in an Instagram post.

“During past three days, the market has witnessed fluctuations and a rise in foreign currency rate, although in the early days of this week exporters returned considerable revenues to the economic cycle and it was expected to see a drop in foreign currency rate. But due to exemption of imports of some items by sailors and residents of border regions, it rose,” the statement reads.

Hemmati said the CBI will ask the government to review the import ban exemptions for residents of borders.
