If the Iranian government cannot buy the wheat stored in the warehouses owned by farmers, it will be forced to import at least two million tons of wheat, member of the parliamentary committee on agriculture, water, natural resources and environment, Alimohammed Shayari, said.
If the Iranian Government Trading Company buys wheat at the set price of 22,900 rials (about $ 0.54), then farmers will sell it, Shayari added, Trend reports referring to the Iranian parliament’s website.
Farmers are less interested in wheat sowing as a result of the set price of wheat for the next year, the member of the parliamentary committee added.
Taking into account the high fee for workers, the expensive equipment rental, the price of a kilogram of wheat must be increased by at least 50 percent compared to last year (17,000 rials - about $0.4), Shayari said.
