Trend:

Importing second hand vehicles to Iran would create problems for domestic auto production and auto part sector due to lack of similarities in spare part models, head of Iranian Automotive Parts Manufacturers Association Reza Najafi Manesh told Trend.

"Although the price of second hand vehicles might be cheaper than domestic products, but there will be problem in terms of providing spare parts for these autos," he said.

"Du to this, many countries do not agree with imports of second hand cars since it would also be damaging to domestic production and employment, as well as not bring any profits," Manesh said.

"Choosing other domestic cars, including Tiba, Quick and Saina as an alternatives for the Pride model, will not have particular a difference in terms of price, so they are suitable substitutes. Also, the spare parts for Pride and the other three models are similar, for example the brake pad of Pride and Tiba are very similar," Manesh said.

“More than 30 years have passed since the initial production of Pride model series, while no vehicle in the world is being produced for more than 10 years, and the producers always seek cars of better quality," he indicated.

He also added that Tiba, Quick and Saina have all passed the crash tests, and thus are reliable.

The debate over imports of second hand vehicles has its opponents and supporters in Iran. Iran's Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade is clearly an opponent of the idea.

"How can we import vehicles with current foreign currency resources?," Minister Reza Rahmani asked.
