Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan agree to increase mutual trade

The 15th meeting of the Turkmen-Uzbek joint commission on trade, economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation was held in Ashgabat, Trend reports Nov. 25 with reference to the Turkmen Foreign Ministry.

The Turkmen delegation was led by Deputy Prime Minister Esenmyrat Orazgeldyev, and the Uzbek delegation was headed by the country’s First Deputy Prime Minister Alchibay Ramatov.

The parties agreed to continue the work on increasing exports of products manufactured in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan, including textile, silk, oil and gas, chemical industries, agricultural equipment and cars, the report said.

During the meeting, the course of the implementation of agreements and arrangements reached at a high level was discussed. The parties also considered interaction in the fields of agriculture, water and environmental protection.

The sides discussed the possibility of developing cooperation in the fields of transport and transit, including the simplification of customs procedures. A discussion was held on the implementation of the project on the creation of the Uzbekistan-Turkmenistan-Iran-Oman international transport and transit corridor.

Following the meeting, the parties signed the corresponding protocol. The next meeting of the commission will be held in Tashkent in 2020.

The total trade turnover between Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan increased to $274 million in 2018 from $159 million in 2017.
