By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
Loladze Farm, the only producer of kiwano in Georgia, plans to increase the production, taking into account the growing demand in the local market for this exotic fruit, Trend reports citing EastFruit information and analytical platform.
The lands of the Loladze Farm are located in the Lagodekhi region (Kakheti district, Eastern Georgia).
The farm decided to produce kiwano about four years ago and received its first crop in 2018. Since then, it has been supplying large supermarkets with its products. The price of Georgian-made kiwano is 28 lari ($9.8) per one kilogram.
“The harvest begins in the summer and lasts until October. The demand for it was so high that next year we plan to significantly increase its production. In particular, we will increase the planting area of Kiwano seedlings to 100 ha,” said farm representative Lasha Loladze.
The kiwano is an oval-shaped fruit which has an orange skin with lots of tiny horns. That's why kiwano is sometimes called a horned melon. The kiwano is slightly sweet and has a refreshing taste.
Reportedly, Loladze Farm also grows mini-kiwi (actinidia).
Speaking about immediate plans, Loladze said that in the near future, the farm will also start production of okra and pepino.
