Iran may ban lemon exports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 1

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

Taking into account the growing demand for citrus fruits in Iran, the export of lemons should be banned, according to a letter by deputy minister of the Ministry of Industry, Mines and Trade Abbas Ghobadi, to the director general Said Abbaspur, Trend reports citing Tasnim news agency.

According to report, the reason for the ban on lemon exports is the spread of the coronavirus and the state of world and Iranian trade markets.

It is also planned to increase the consumption of fruits that strengthen the body's immune system.

Iran is one of the countries heavily affected by the rapidly-spreading coronavirus. According to recent reports from the Iranian officials, over 44,600 people have been infected, 2,898 people have already died. Meanwhile, over 14,600 have reportedly recovered from the disease.

The country continues to apply strict measures to contain the further spread. Reportedly, the disease was brought to Iran by a businessman from Iran's Qom city, who went on a business trip to China, despite official warnings. The man died later from the disease.

The Islamic Republic only announced its first infections and deaths from the coronavirus on Feb. 19.

Some sources claim the coronavirus outbreak started as early as November 2019.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared COVID-19 a pandemic on March 11.
