TEHRAN, Iran, April 13

Trend:

Iran's Railway Company and Customs Administration signed an agreement to set up first dry port in Eslamshahr County, said the Managing Director of the Railway Company.

"The establishment of dry port in Aprin at Eslamshahar was on the agenda of the Railway Company over past two decades," said Saeed Rasouli, Trend reports citing IRIB.

The two entities also agreed to facilitate early release of imported cargo from the customs. Meanwhile, customs checkpoints will be installed in railway terminals to increase import, export and transit of cargo.

"The direct cargo transit from borders to Aprin's dry port would reduce the unloading and transportation costs," said Director General of Iran Customs Administration Mehdi Mirashrafi.

"Major part of goods are imported to the country by containers whereas by transportation of goods to Aprin port the empty containers can return to border ports earlier," he added.

Aprin's dry port will be located on 1,000-hectare area in Eslamshahr, 20 kilometers away from Tehran, and it's expected to receive more than 60 percent of imported goods.

The new port will connect north-south and east- west railway network of the country. The first phase of the port would operate in next six months in cooperation with the private sector. After the commissioning of the first phase, more than 1,000 job places will be created.
