Georgia in talks with United States on wheat imports

BAKU, Azerbaijan, April 28

By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

Georgia will not face wheat shortage due to the wheat export restrictions imposed by Russia, said Levan Silagava, executive director of the Georgian Flour Producers Association, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

According to Silagava, Russia has limited wheat exports to Georgia and the country's quota of 7 million tons was reached on April 26; however, the export of wheat from Russia will continue for about a month.

Meanwhile, Russia suspended the export of wheat, rye, meslin, barley and corn outside the Eurasian Economic Union until July 1. In late March, the Russian government passed a decree imposing a quota on a number of crops in the amount of seven million tons. The Russian Ministry of Agriculture noted that such a measure will stabilize grain prices and in addition, it will help to ensure the country's domestic needs for grain and its processed products.

“Shipment of wheat will continue from Russia. Georgian companies have contracts with Russia, and shortages are not expected, as we always have a two-month stock,” Silagava explained.

He added that Minister of Agriculture Levan Davitashvili is in talks with the United States to arrange import of 50,000 tons of wheat in about a month and a half.
