By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

The harvesting of silkworm cocoons is underway in Azerbaijan, Trend reports referring to a source in the Azerbaijani Industrial Corporation (AIC) on June 8.

According to the source, this year it’s planned to harvest 34.4 tons of the cocoons in the Gakh district, and the silkworm breeders have already begun delivering raw cocoons to Azeripek LLC.

“In the first 2 days of the season, 450 kg of raw cocoons were delivered to the reception point at silkworm breeding station in Gakh,” the source said.

As the source noted, since the season beginning, 860 boxes of silkworms have been delivered to the Gakh district for processing. Of these, 620 boxes are elite, and 240 boxes are hybrid industrial silkworms.

This season for the first time, silkworm cocoons in 50 boxes each will be grown in the Beylagan and Samukh districts.

Azeripek LLC purchases raw cocoons at 4 manat ($2.3) per kilogram from the silk-breeders, and the state pays them subsidies worth 5 manat ($2.9) for the cocoons’ production.
