Kazakhstan reports partial recovery of local business activity

Kazakhstan recorded a recovery in the economy as the index of business activity in the economy in May rose to 44 compared to 37.2 in Apr. 2020, Trend reports with reference to the Kazakhstan’s National Bank.

The National Bank said that these are the results of a survey held among 447 enterprises of Kazakhstan.

“These companies represent the real sector of the economy, i.e. industry, construction and services. Currently the dynamics of the index by sectors remains negative against the background of quarantine restrictions imposed in the country,” the report said.

Compared to other industries, the most noticeable improvement was observed in the service sector, the index of which rose to 42.8 or by 8.1 percentage points. The index of business activity in construction was 42.1, in industry it was 46.9.

“Kazakhstan (46.9) lags behind China (50.7), South Africa (50.2) and Saudi Arabia (48.1) based on the industry index, but is ahead of Australia (41.6), South Korea (41.3), the UK (40.7), France (40.6), the US (39.8), Russia (36.2), etc,” the report said.

The business climate index for the economy of Kazakhstan increased in May to (-) 13.7 whereas in April this indicator fell to (-) 31.6, the report said.

“The business environment has improved slightly and it has become less difficult for ventures operating in the real sector. However, negative dynamics are still observed,” the National Bank said.
