BAKU, Azerbaijan, June 10
By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:
Georgian Agara Sugar Company has re-opened its production plant, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.
The opening of the plant was attended by Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Natia Turnava, Minister of Environment Protection and Agriculture Levan Davitashvili and State Representative of Shida Kartli region Georgy Khodzhevanishvili.
The company's plant will employ 500 locals, and its daily production will be up to 500 tons of sugar.
The company stopped its production in November 2016. The reason for the closure of the plant was competition with imported Ukrainian products and the high price of sugar on international exchanges. In June 2017, the company resumed production, but the next year it stopped work for a similar reason.
“Georgian sugar produced by Agara will replace imported sugar by about 50 percent, which will significantly affect prices,” said Turnava.
The minister emphasized the importance of local production for the whole country, especially in the current situation, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Now, if we have such big local production, this will allow us to have more affordable sugar prices in the market. In addition, 500 local residents have resumed their activities at the plant,” Turnava said.
