Russia becomes main importer of Uzbek textile

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Aug. 10

Uzbekistan’s export of textile and textile goods reached $1 billion in the period from January through July 2020, a representative of Uzbekistan textile and garment industry Association's press service (Uztextileprom) told Trend.

“As a result of timely measures taken by the government to support entrepreneurs, 252 exporting enterprises resumed their operations during this period, and assistance was provided to boost production and export,” the message said.

Uztextileprom Association and enterprises of the industry achieved increase in export growth rate in the period from January through July 2020, which reached 112 percent, compared to the same period of 2019.

According to the representative, yarn accounts for 49 percent of total exports, while the share of value-added products has reached 51 percent.

The bulk of exports came accounted for countries such as Russia ($394 million or 39 percent share in total exports), China ($188 million or 18 percent), Kyrgyzstan ($139 million or 13 percent) and Turkey ($123 million or 12 percent).

Uzbekistan is the sixth cotton manufacturer in the world. By the government decision, the country has completely abandoned the export of cotton fiber since 2019.
