BAKU, Azerbaijan, October 10

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Peach harvesting (including nectarine) in Georgia is almost complete, export deliveries are still ongoing, but in relatively small volumes, Trend reports via EastFruit portal.

According to preliminary estimates of the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, the peach crop in the country has exceeded 40,000 tons. For comparison: in 2017, the peach crop was 32,300 tons, in 2018 - 27,500 tons, in 2019 - 22,300 tons.

As reported, for the period from May through October 4, the country exported 25,300 tons of peaches, which is approximately double the figure for the same period last year. In monetary terms, exports amounted to $21.3 million, which is 70 percent more than a year ago.

Peach exports from Georgia in value in 2017 amounted to $4.3 million, in 2018 - $8.2 million, in 2019 - $2.5 million.

The main export market for the Georgian peach this season was Russia, where 16,800 tons were sent (which amounted to 66 percent of all exports), followed by Azerbaijan - 60,000 tons.

As the Deputy Minister of Environment and Agriculture Solomon Pavliashvili noted, the peach harvest and export figures this year are a record for the country.

According to him, this year the diversification of the sales markets for the Georgian peach was intensified, including the European Union. In particular, about 80 tons were exported to Poland.

“Deliveries to Europe is a very important step. Our peaches and nectarines, besides good quality, are distinguished by excellent taste, and I think the demand for them in Europe will increase next year. Yes, there is quite strong competition, but I think we will be able to have our niche there, ”said Pavliashvili.

As he noted, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Moldova, Qatar, etc. were also among the export markets.
