Volume of tea leaves purchased in Iran announced

About 127,000 tons of tea leaves have been purchased from farmers since the beginning of second month of the current Iranian year (April 20, 2020), Chairman of Iran Tea Organization Habib Jahansaz said, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad of Iran.

Jahansaz noted that 60,400 tons of purchased tea leaves were first grade and 66,200 tons were second grade.

The chairman added that the value of tea leaves purchased from farmers amounted 4.96 trillion rials (about $118 million) during the reporting period.

“So far, about 85 percent ie 4.91 trillion rials (about $117 million) of these funds have been paid to the farmers, and the rest will be paid soon,” he said.

Jahansaz emphasized that about 28,500 tons of dry tea have been produced so far. The dry tea production is expected to reach 30,000 tons in the current Iranian year (from March 20, 2020 to March 21, 2021).

According to the chairman of the organization, the harvesting of tea leaves will continue by the end of 7th month of current Iranian year (October 21, 2020).

It is forecasted that 130,000-135,000 tons of tea leaves will be purchased from farmers in the current Iranian year.

The price of first-grade tea leaves is 46,000 rials (about $1.09), and the cost of second-grade tea leaves is 33,000 rials (about 78 cents) this year.

In Iran, some products such as rice, sugar beet, wheat and tea are purchased from farmers by the Government Trade Corporation (GTC) of Iran under a guarantee and paid for in installments.
