Iran exports potatoes to Iraq to prevent smuggling

TEHRAN, Iran, Nov.16

Trend:

Iran is sent to export its local potatoes to Iraq in order to prevent the significant amount of smuggling, Trend reports via ILNA.

Following an agreement with Iraq , Iran would export specific share of its vegetables to this country. Some experts believe that density of cargo trucks at borders would cause problem for exporters since the vegetables have short expiration date.

Spokesman for the National Association of Potatoes of Iran Mohammad Rahimniazi, said that Iran is in a good position to produce potatoes.

Currently Iran produces from 4.7 to 5.2 million tons of potatoes per year.

"About 300,000 to 500,000 tons of potato from the following figure is being exported to the neighboring countries," said Rahimniazi.

"Lack of diplomacy created problem in marketing products," he said. "The mismanagement and planning have damaged domestic and foreign market."

Rahimniazi said the accumulation of products at borders would have the risk of expiration while buyers abuse the situation and purchase agricultural products at cheap price.
