OECD talks first country-level project with Turkmenistan

BAKU, Azerbaijan, December 15

By Jeila Aliyeva - Trend:

Turkmenistan is one of five countries participating in an EU-financed project on improving the legal environment for business in Central Asia, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) told Trend.

“The project involves both analytical work and capacity-building activities. In the first phase of the project, we undertook an assessment of the legal environment for business in each country across ten dimensions,” says OECD, adding that the report based on this assessment was discussed at a ministerial meeting involving all five countries in September; it will appear early next year.

“On the basis of that assessment, we identified two or three priority areas with each in which we will work intensively with each country in 2021-22,” noted OECD.

OECD highlighted that in the case of Turkmenistan, these concern registration procedures, the operational environment for SMEs and the legal framework for foreign investment.

This is in fact the first country-level project OECD has conducted with Turkmenistan.

Turkmenistan has participated in OECD’s regional ministerial meetings for a number of years but this is the first bilateral work and it involves a far deeper level of engagement, says the message.

“Our work involves analysis, policy dialogue and recommendations. In our most recent webinar, on aspects of policy entrepreneurs and SMEs, government colleagues posed a large number of extremely specific and concrete questions, which was very encouraging,” said the message.
