Kazakhstan resumes scrap metal exports as restrictions get lifted

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec. 15

By Nargiz Sadikhova – Trend:

Kazakhstan has lifted restrictions on supplies of locally produced scrap metal to Russia, State Secretary - Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade of Russia Viktor Evtukhov said, Trend reports citing Russian media.

Evtukhov noted that the decision was made during a Eurasian Economic Commission meeting on Dec. 4, 2020. The export of scrap metal was resumed already, he said.

He added that scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals are strategic raw materials for the Russian metallurgical industry. Thus, the operation of electric steel-making facilities completely depends on the availability of ferrous scrap.

In Oct. 2020, Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Industry and Infrastructural Development is looking to extend the prohibition on the export of scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals

The draft of the corresponding decree was submitted for public discussions which will be held until Oct. 23, 2020.

The decree said that the export ban is to be extended for a period of 2 years and covers export via road transport. The prohibited goods list includes scrap and waste of ferrous and non-ferrous metals, as well as pipes, rails, elements of railway tracks, and rolling stock that was in use.
