Hazelnut yield in Azerbaijan to increase in coming years

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Dec.24

By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:

The main goal of the Azerbaijan Hazelnut Producers and Exporters Association is to fully create the mechanism for cooling products and sending them for export, Chairman of the association Ismayil Orujov told Trend.

From January through October 2020, Azerbaijan’s revenues from the export of hazelnuts amounted to $86.6 million.

Orujov noted that the decline in exports in monetary terms compared to the same period last year amounted to 14.4 percent.

From January through October 2020, the volume of exports of hazelnuts amounted to 14,190 tons, which is 23.4 percent less compared to the same period of 2019.

“In 2019, the hazelnut harvest in Azerbaijan amounted to 20,000 tons. The volume of exports since the beginning of the season has made up 14,000 tons, and the remaining 6,000 tons sold on the domestic market,” he said.

In 2020, the association carried out large-scale activities in the country to combat pests of agricultural crops and urged farmers to actively participate in them, he added.

“More and more land areas are set aside for the cultivation of hazelnuts. In subsequent years, it is planned to increase the volume of the harvest. Today hazelnuts are grown on 80,000 hectares, but the effect of this will be felt only in 3-4 years,” the association head concluded.

The Azerbaijan Hazelnut Producers and Exporters Association was registered in the Ministry of Justice of the country on October 31, 2016.
