Turkmenistan purchased 34,000 tons of potatoes from Russia for $11 million this year, Trend reports with reference to Turkmenportal information portal.
Last year 308 tons were purchased for $90,000.
Turkmenistan ranks second in the purchase of potatoes from Russia after Ukraine.
Turkmenistan is developing the potato growing sector, two-thirds of the volume imported by Turkmenistan was accounted for by seed potatoes.
As reported, The Ministry of Agriculture and Environmental Protection of Turkmenistan will sign a contract with Russia’s Veya Investments Limited for the purchase of 14,000 tons of winter potato seeds.
Reportedly, agriculture in Turkmenistan is developing rapidly. It is one of the most important sectors of the country's economy. The main types of crops grown on the territory of Turkmenistan are wheat, cotton, rice, sugar beet, fodder, vegetable, and fruits.
The development of agriculture is carried out on a scientific basis. Various types of crops are grown taking into account the agro-ecological characteristics of the country's regions.
Special attention is paid to increasing the volume of products in Turkmenistan. As a result, in recent years, the country has increased the production of vegetables and fruit, and berries and enlarged the area of perennial plants, vineyards, and greenhouses.
