Iran eyes barter deal with Indonesia

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Feb.8

Trend:

Iran and Indonesia have the capacity and interest for bartering and the government is seeking to mostly barter cellulose products, said the head of Iran-Indonesia joint committee Yadollah Tahernejad, Trend reports via ILNA.

"The government is preparing the agenda, and the private sector would also offer its support," said Tahernejad.

"It is possible that we'd have considerable economic transaction with Indonesia, similar to what we have with Turkey, and a major part of it could be done through barter," he said.

"The customs restrictions, transportation problems and the Central Bank of Iran's complex rules have created obstacles for bartering. Barter commodities require various permits to be released while due to sanctions, a seller should be assured that there would be no problems," he said.

"Palm oil is an important commodity in Iran's trade with Indonesia and is supported by the government and is considered for bartering, " he said.

"Iran's trade volume with Indonesia has declined from €2 billion to €600 in past three years, due to money transaction problems and sanctions," he said.

"Major part of Iran's import from Indonesia is palm oil, paper basic material, various food items while Iran exports fruit, date, bitumen and steel," he said.

"The seizure of Indonesian ship did not have specific effect on trade between the two countries, we hope that by possible lift of sanctions bilateral trade would increase," he said referring to two Iranian and Panamanian-flagged supertankers being seized by Indonesian authorities on January 25.
