Iran`s Expediency Council asks gov't to play major role in reconstruction of Azerbaijan's Karabakh

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March. 3

Trend:

Iran's government should play a key role as far as reconstruction of liberated lands in the Karabakh region of Azerbaijan is concerned, Secretary of Expediency Council of Iran Mohsen Rezaei told Trend.

"Azerbaijan is not only our neighbor, we are a nation in two countries,” Rezaei said.

Following over a month of military action to liberate its territories from Armenian occupation from late Sept. to early Nov. 2020, Azerbaijan has pushed Armenia to sign the surrender document. A joint statement on the matter was made by the Azerbaijani president, Armenia's PM, and the president of Russia.

A complete ceasefire and a cessation of all hostilities in the zone of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict was introduced on Nov. 10, 2020.

“We are proud of the independence of Azerbaijan,” he said. “From the very beginning, we supported the territorial integrity and independence of Azerbaijan.”

Referring to the reconstruction process of Nagorno-Karabakh, he says that Iran has significant human resources and technical and engineering knowledge to carry out work.

“In terms of distance, due to the very short distance between Iran and Karabakh, we can play a good role in reconstruction at a very low cost,” he said.

Rezaei went on to say that Iran wants to participate in the reconstruction in Karabakh, adding that the government in Iran should be more active in this issue.

He reaffirmed that “the general policy of the Expediency Council is to preserve the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, and we have supported this policy so far."
