Georgia sees decrease in car re-export

BAKU, Azerbaijan, March 23

Cars re-export was among the sectors that saw the most significant decline of 52.2 percent from January through February 2020 in Georgia, Trend reports via the National Statistics Office of Georgia (Geostat).

In 2 months of 2021, exports from Georgia declined by 6.8 percent. If in the reporting period, cars worth $105 million were sold from Georgia, in the same period of 2021 – exports worth $50 million.

In unison with a decline on exports, the import of vehicles decreased by 28 percent as well.

In 2001, the re-export of cars accounted for only 0.17 percent of the total export, in 2005- 2 percent, in 2008 - 7.5 percent. In 2011, the car re-export increased to $450 million a year, in 2013 - to $730 million.

In 2015 re-exports fell to $180 million due to the introduction of fuel regulations in Azerbaijan.

The recovery began in 2017 and in 2019 car re-export amounted to $733 million. The recovery was hindered by the pandemic and car re-export stood at $404 million in 2020.
