BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 13

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

UNIDO is currently implementing several national, regional and global projects in Kazakhstan, the UNIDO official told Trend.

The official noted that Kazakhstan has been a supporter of the UN system since its independence, and became a Member State of UNIDO in 1997.

“Cooperation between UNIDO and the Government of Kazakhstan has been advancing in recent years through Kazakhstan’s participation in UNIDO’s global forum events and a willingness to strengthen cooperation in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The main areas of engagement comprise promotion of clean and innovative technologies, green industry, and improved competitiveness of enterprises and industrial modernization, as well as industrial statistics and quality infrastructure,” the official said.

They added that UNIDO is an implementing agency of UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Frameworks (UNSDCFs) 2021-2025 in Kazakhstan.

Thus, UNIDO is currently implementing four national, regional and global projects in Kazakhstan, mostly focused on energy efficiency and green economy:

  • Global Cleantech Innovation Programme (GCIP) in Kazakhstan – Promoting cleantech innovation and entrepreneurship in small- and medium-sized enterprises for green jobs in Kazakhstan;
  • Regional Demonstration Project for Coordinated Management of ODS and POPs Disposal in Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan and Armenia, supporting the countries’ compliance with the Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer and the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants;
  • Partnership for Action on Green Economy (PAGE), a global initiative on creating enabling conditions for national inclusive green economies, including in Kazakhstan; and
  • Preparatory Phase for the Clean Energy Centre of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), which is expected to serve as a regional hub and think-tank for sustainable energy issues in Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkey, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan.
